Keep Metal Out of Your Smile

In the old days, the words, “you have a cavity,” were a lot more dreaded than they are now. Those words meant that you would have to get a noticeable metal filling that would stand out in your smile. Now, thanks to tooth-colored fillings, we can keep metal out of your smile. Dr. Share, your restorative dentist in Financial District of Boston, can use these fillings to seamlessly heal your cavity while also blending right in with your existing tooth enamel. If you have a cavity that needs a filling, keep it metal-free by contacting us today to schedule an appointment.

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings are made from a mixture of plastic composite resin and glassy porcelain. This material can be custom shaded to match the color of your natural tooth enamel. It also mimics your natural teeth even in the way light bounces off of it. In fact, no one should even be able to tell that you had dental work done!

Process of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Getting a tooth-colored filling is a pretty simple process. First, Dr. Share will apply local anesthetic to the area to make sure you don’t feel a thing during the procedure. Then, he will carefully remove the decayed or damaged material from the tooth. Next, he’ll apply the composite resin material in layers, sculpting it until it reaches the right size and shape. Finally, the filling will be hardened with a curing light, and voila! Your new restoration is complete.

Unlike with traditional metal fillings, there is no need to remove some of your enamel to make room for the filling. This not only saves time during the procedure, but it’s a more conservative treatment option that allows you to keep more of your natural tooth structure.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings offer a whole host of benefits over traditional metal filings, such as:

  • Aesthetically pleasing: Tooth-colored fillings blend right into your smile instead of standing out. As mentioned earlier, no one should be able to notice you even have a filling!
  • Safer for teeth: Metal fillings tend to expand and contract when exposed to different temperatures, wearing down the tooth and causing it to crack and eventually break. Tooth-colored fillings do not expand and contract, meaning they’re safer for the teeth.
  • Restored dental strength: Tooth-colored fillings are bonded directly to the teeth, restoring strength to the structure.
  • Custom-shaded: No two teeth are the same, and as a result, neither are two tooth-colored fillings. Each filling is shaded to match your existing tooth enamel.
  • No tooth discoloration: The color of metal fillings often bleeds into the enamel, giving the tooth a grayish appearance. Tooth-colored fillings do not do this.
  • More conservative treatment: With metal fillings, more of the tooth structure had to be removed to make room for the restoration. Tooth-colored fillings bond directly to the tooth, meaning less enamel has to be removed.
