Still, as wonderful as dental implants sound, you are not 100 percent convinced that you can afford them. Will your insurance help? Let’s go into some detail about how dental insurance typically applies to dental implants.

Understanding the Dental Implant Process

While many dental insurance policies cover dental implants, quite a few others do not. However, even if your policy falls into the latter category, that isn’t necessarily the end of the story. The dental implant process takes place over several months and requires several stages of treatment. Your insurance may cover at least part of your new smile.

Here is a basic breakdown of the implant process and how insurance typically applies:

  • Preparatory work, such as gum disease treatment or extractions. Most dental insurance plans do cover these types of treatments, usually at a rate of around 50 percent of the treatment’s total cost.
  • Implant placement surgery. This is the stage of treatment least likely to be covered by dental insurance. However, some types of medical insurance may cover it.
  • Abutment. You may need to undergo a second minor surgery to have abutments placed on your implants (abutments are small connectors that attach implants to the prosthetic teeth on top of them). Insurance may or may not cover the abutment procedure.
  • Restoration. Most dental insurance policies do provide coverage for the crowns, bridges, and dentures that go on top of dental implants.

Planning Your Budget for Dental Implants

Here are a few steps you can take to make sure your budget will be able to accommodate dental implants:

  • Attend a consultation. The team at your dentist’s office will give you a personalized estimate of the cost of your treatment.
  • Investigate insurance. Familiarize yourself with your insurance policy and its terms. Get to know its coverage rates, its annual maximum, and any conditions it applies to treatments.
  • Consider financing. The majority of patients are eligible for no- or low-interest financing.

Is the Cost Worth It?

Even if your insurance covers a portion of your dental implant treatment, it is still likely that you will have to pay a significant amount of money out of pocket. Are implants worth the cost? Most people who have already made the investment would answer with an unequivocal yes! Dental implants replace missing teeth from the roots upward and last longer than any other tooth replacement option. They also offer astounding oral health benefits and natural-looking aesthetics.

Whether or not your dental insurance covers dental implants, you may be surprised by how easy it is to make room in your budget for this treatment! Why not get started on your journey to a renewed smile by scheduling a consultation with a local implant dentist today?
