Do you want straight teeth without the awkwardness and restrictions that come with metal braces? Invisalign, the set of customized clear aligners you wear over your teeth, is another option. It’s more comfortable and less clunky than braces. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best treatment option for everyone. Before seeking Invisalign treatment, ask yourself these 4 questions.

What Smile Flaws Are You Trying to Fix?

Invisalign is a versatile and effective treatment that can fix many issues, such as:

  • Mildly crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Overcrowded teeth

However, if your teeth are severely misaligned, Invisalign may not be enough to treat those flaws. You may benefit more from traditional braces. If you are unsure, it’s best to ask your dentist to decide which option would be better for you.

How Old Are You?

Invisalign is generally not recommended for children, as their smiles are still developing and shifting. Adults and teens over the age of 13 are great candidates for Invisalign. Because of its transparency, teens and adults prefer Invisalign. High school is hard enough without having to deal with braces, so it makes sense that they would enjoy a less visible option for straighter teeth. Adults like Invisalign because they don’t want to wear braces that make them look like a teenager again.

How Dedicated Are You to Straightening Your Smile?

For treatment to be effective, your aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day. They should only be removed when brushing, flossing, eating, or drinking anything other than water. You have to be committed to wearing them as much as possible. Otherwise you could compromise your treatment. If you are the kind of person to remove your aligners and forget to put them back in, or lose them, then your dentist might recommend braces, as they can’t be removed or lost.

Additionally, you will likely be required to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their newly straightened position. Usually this is worn only while you sleep. However, it can be easy to let this habit fall by the wayside, which can make your teeth shift back to their previously crooked state. Therefore, you should be committed to maintaining your straight smile even after completing Invisalign treatment.

Can You Afford Treatment?

The final cost of your Invisalign treatment will depend on a few factors, like the severity of misalignment and the length of treatment. Although the cost has decreased in recent years, Invisalign is still generally more expensive than braces. Talk to your insurance provider. Oftentimes they will provide at least partial coverage for orthodontic treatment, especially if you are under 18. Ultimately, the cost depends on your individual case.

No matter how much research you do about Invisalign versus braces, the only way to know which treatment option is right for you is to visit your dentist or orthodontist. If you want to fix your smile, schedule an appointment today.
